by Carlos Eduardo Ozório — July 28, 2010

It wouldn’t be wrong to say Mackenzie Dern is another pretty face among the gentle art’s ladies. However, it would be wise to take into account the old saying “He who sees the face, doesn’t see the heart.” Behind her fair appearance, there’s an aggressive fighter, a promising athlete of the new generation.

Like father, like daughter. Mackenzie’s father is black belt Wellington Megaton, winner of the last five installments of the International Master and Senior tournament. By her doting father’s side, the fighter travels the world training, competing and winning. After winning the 2010 Worlds, she made her purple belt debut in grand style at the Rio Open.

The Garcia Family (Yuma BJJ)

Upon first starting Jiu-Jitsu, you may have been told that your team should be treated as your famliy. That you should coach and support one another to bring the absolute best out of each other. For many people, their team becomes their extended family, and their gym, their home. But what if your team really was your own flesh and blood? When Jiu-Jitsu was first introduced to the world, it was made known by a family name: Gracie. In present times, the tradition of family bond through Jiu-Jitsu, still grows strong. From Father and Mother to children alike, the family that trains together, stays together.

2010 AZSBJJF School Rankings

The final AZSBJJF School Rankings for 2010 will be coming to its close after the 2nd Southwest BJJ Classic, the last tournament of the year. This year, the Top FIVE schools in the Kids and Adult Division will receive awards at the first tournament of the new year, the 6th AZ Int’l Open of BJJ. With the close runnings, the 2nd Southwest BJJ Classic will serve to be a decider for some of the schools.

In the Kids Division, the run for the Champion spot is lead by MMA Lab with Lion’s Den only 8 points on their tail. 3rd, 4th, and 5th places are currently held by Ruffhouse, Siege MMA/Lotus Club, and Relson Gracie AZ, but as with the top 2, the 3 schools are only separated by a matter of a few points.  Team Megaton is in 6th place, despite being last year’s Champion, but is only 1 point away from breaking into the Top 5. Close behind them is Team GD Jiu-Jitsu, who are three champions away from making Top 5. 8th, 9th, and 10th place is secured by Rey Diogo/De Brazil, BJJ Revolution, and Yuma BJJ, but with such close margins and with one more tournament left, anyone can make Top 5.
