“The AZSBJJF’s partnership with the Jiu-Jitsu Federation of Japan (JJFJ) started in 2009, when I met its President, Taka Watanabe, at the 2nd Rickson Gracie International. Mackenzie Dern wins gold at the European Championship

Mackenzie in first place

The European Jiu-Jitsu Championship has grown. Still a child of just seven years, the championship is an absolute success in terms of spectator and participant numbers. “In 2010 there were 1,500 signed up, versus 1,280 in 2009,” said a satisfied Marcelo Siriema, general coordinator of the IBJJF.

This greatness is clear to anyone and sees what is going on in Lisbon, Portugal’s Casal Vistoso gymnasium. Just as with Pan and the Worlds, the European can now only fit into no less than four days. The second day of competition of the European Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2010, on Friday in Lisbon featured Makenzie Dern, who is about to turn 17 years old. The young and beautiful talent comes from noble lineage. The daughter of Wellington “Megaton” Dias, the now-European champion’s  father is her greatest motivator and, at the same time, an unwavering guide. The winner of her weight division in several championships, including the 2009Worlds, Makenzie still still has some time ahead of her before getting her purple belt.

Broadnax Brothers in Action

It was another remarkable weekend for Jiu-Jitsu in Arizona. Not only almost 400 competitors displayed great amounts of talent during the two days of tough disputes inside the Gymnasium of Westwood High School, in Mesa, but we also testified a very unique match: The twin brothers Christian and Christopher Broadnax (Nova Uniao Las Vegas) classified for the absolute juvenile final match and did not even think in closing out the bracket. Rather than that, they performed amazingly against each other, with Christian opening a 5-0 lead before catching Christopher in a nasty triangle.
