This past weekend, on February 5th, Arizona made history in the Jiu-Jitsu community by hosting it’s very first all-female open mat. Simply entitled “Inspire”, the free event gathered over 50 women from 23 different schools, hailing from South San Francisco, Las Vegas, and all over Arizona, on to the mats of Team Megaton in Phoenix. Organized by Gustavo Dantas Purple belt Kristina Barlaan (Nova União), the success of the event could not have been possible without the support of Luciana Dias (Gracie Humaita), the first and only female Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt in Arizona, and her step-daughter, Mackenzie Dern (Gracie Humaita), who is fresh off her double-gold performance at the 2011 European Championship.

2010 AZSBJJF Final School Rankings
Monday, December 6th, 2010Check out the final 2010 School Rankings for the Adult and Kids Division for this season. The Ranking includes results from 5th AZ International Open, 2nd AZ Kids Cup, 2010 AZ State Championship & 2nd Southwest Classic. Team GD Jiu-Jitsu won the Adult Ranking for the second year in a row and the MMA Lab won the Kids Division, improving from 2009′s 3rd place. Notable Mentions: In the Kids Division, Team Relson Gracie AZ, led by Nathan Zigler, improved from eighth place in 2009 to third place in 2010. In the Adult Rankings, Martin Escobar’s team, Rey Diogo/De Brazil, improved from fifth place in 2009 to third place in 2010. In 2011, we are expecting to break 700 competitors for the first time.
When deciding on the MVPs, the following criteria was used: 1) Most amount of Gold medals won, 2) Belt rank, 3) Age division, and 4) Bigger bracket. For example, in the case of a tie, the award will go to the competitor with the higher belt rank. If a tie still exists, then the award will go to the competitor who was placed in a more difficult age division (Adult division presents a higher challenge than the Juvenile, Master, and Senior divisions). Finally, if there is still a tie situation, the award will go to the competitor who was placed within larger brackets. MVPs will be sponsored by GD Jiu-Jitsu Events for the 2011 AZSBJJF Season.
