Although the beautiful 3.5″ medals were a great reward for competing and placing, 3 lucky competitors were able to win the special raffle prizes offered at the 5th AZ Int’l Open:
It was a good day for Alex Richard (Tigers Lair AZ). Not only was this his first time ever competing in a Jiu-Jitsu tournament (Alex was a former Olympic Grecco-Roman wrestler), but he also won his division and the 32″ LCD HDTV.
Giovanna Jaure (Yuma BJJ) had a smile from ear to ear as she ran to the mat area when she heard her number called to win the Sony PSP.
With the most amount of Women competitors in AZ Jiu-Jitsu history, Maria Magana (MMA Lab) was the proud winner of the Flip Video Camera.
The 5th AZ Int’l Open was also the stage for the 2009 Overall School Rankings and MVP Competitors of the Year:
Kids Division
1st place – Team Megaton (217 points)
2nd place – Lion’s Den (194 points)
3rd place – MMA Lab (193 points)
MVP of the Year – Joseph Davis (Team Megaton)
Adult Division
1st place – Team GD Jiu-Jitsu (444 points)
2nd place – BJJ Revolution (241 points)
3rd place – Team Megaton (197 points)
MVP of the Year – Derling Gonzalez (Team GD Jiu-Jitsu)
Congratulations to the schools and their students for their outstanding teamwork and competitive spirit. The 5th AZ Int’l Open marked the first tournament of 2010. Coaches/Instructors, be sure to get your students/team ready for the 2010 competition year!
